"We need cheap energy"

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced measures for affordable energy at the World Economic Forum in Davos - similar to Trump in his inaugural speech.

In her speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos (pictured; source: Reuters/Yves Herman), von der Leyen pointed out that the EU had succeeded in breaking its dependence on Russian gas in particular. "But freedom had its price." Energy costs would have to fall again in the coming years. "And that for all Europeans."

Contrary to Donald Trump's line, the Commission President spoke out against turning away from climate policy. Ignoring the effects of climate change would be irresponsible. She also cited the current example of the devastating fires in California.

"Race against time"

Von der Leyen, who had made concessions before her re-election, particularly with regard to agricultural policy and transport policy, now expressly committed to the agreed targets of the Paris Climate Agreement. "We are not in a race against each other here, but in a race against time."
