Zelenskyi said in Davos that Ukraine is prepared to allow Azerbaijani gas to pass through its territory.
Ukraine's President Zelenskyi, who discussed a deal with Azerbaijan's President Aliyev in Davos, said in Davos that Ukraine would be willing to transit gas from Azerbaijan to the EU. "A contract can be concluded quickly if the political will is there," Selenskyj said, adding that he would wait for signals from Slovakia and other countries in this regard.
The possibility of transporting Azerbaijani natural gas through Ukraine was also discussed before the termination of the transit agreement on December 31, 2024 and was found to be feasible. At that time, however, President Zelensky insisted that it would actually have to be natural gas from Azerbaijan - at least on a swap basis - and not Russian gas, which would be sold by Gazprom to SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic) on the Ukrainian-Russian border and SOCAR would either
- arrange the sale to European customers on the Ukrainian-Russian border and leave it to them to book capacities or
- book transportation capacity in Ukraine and transfer the gas to SPP (Slovenský Plynárenský Priemysel) at the Ukrainian-Slovak border.
The often-mentioned swap option with natural gas from Azerbaijan failed in December 2024 and before that - at first glance - because neither Azerbaijani SOCAR nor any other non-Russian company had sufficient Azerbaijani gas volumes to replace the Russian gas volumes (approx. 15 billion Nm3) routed through Ukraine at the time by means of a swap.
President Selenskyj has not yet explained whether a solution was found in Davos and, if so, what it was. As is often the case, the "dog could be buried in the details".
