From Friday onwards, the weather will be markedly divided.
Friday: Sun in the Alps, fog in the lowlands
While the Alpine regions will be under blue skies, the lowlands will often remain covered in fog and high mist. The morning hours will start cloudy, especially in the Danube region, in the lowlands and in the southern basins and some valleys. In contrast, the sun will shine almost undisturbed in the mountains and Mühlviertel. The wind will continue to blow weakly to moderately from the east. Temperatures will reach between -2 and +4 degrees Celsius, depending on how the fog clears.
Weekend outlook: sunshine in the mountains, mild due to foehn winds
The weekend will bring ideal winter weather in the mountains. Clear conditions and plenty of sunshine are perfect for outdoor activities. On the ski slopes, temperatures of around 0 degrees Celsius will be more pleasant than recently. A moderate southerly wind will ensure mild conditions in the Alps. In the lowlands, however, it will often remain cloudy until Saturday. From Sunday, the chance of sunshine will also increase in Vienna and the surrounding area. With the support of a föhn wind, temperatures here could rise to 12 degrees Celsius. Values between -2 and +8 degrees are expected in other parts of the country.
Looking ahead to next week: Calm winter weather continues
The coming week will continue to be dominated by high pressure. It will remain largely dry and wintry cold. However, an Italian low could temporarily bring more clouds. Snow does not appear to be a major issue until the end of January, with precipitation only possible at the turn of the month.
